For example, the wise virgins took oil in their vessels with their lamps (Matthew 25:4). Thus we need to be holy vessels ourselves in engaging in holy activities as though we are like the consecrated holy vessels in the temple. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord" (D&C 38:42 see D&C 133:5). If a man therefore purge himself from (sins), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work" (2 Timothy 2:20-21).We are admonished to "go ye out from among the wicked. Paul teaches that "in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth and some to honour, and some to dishonour. For example, "I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel" (Psalms 31:12).As noted, vessels can either be honorable or dishonorable depending on whether they are broken or complete and also depending upon whether they contain the holy spirit or not. Just as a broken vessel is not useful, we may also be broken vessels ourselves, not able or willing to contain the holy spirit. But vessel is also used to describe how we can be defective as persons.

For example, we can be holy vessels like the holy vessels in the temple vessels that are consecrated and show God's work in us. However, in many other verses the term vessel is used to describe our own bodies or how the Lord has shaped us on a potter's wheel.Vessel also describes our efficacy as bodies. For example, "the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel" (Numbers 5:17). The term vessel is also used to describe "a person regarded as having the containing capacity or function of a vessel" (OED).In the scriptures, the most common use of the term vessel is to describe items used in the temple. A vessel is not used to do something but to contain something.

"Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord." (Isaiah 52:11)In its most general sense, vessels are cups, bowls, pitchers or vases used for holding liquids or other contents (Random House Unabridged Dictionary). In its oldest English usage, the word "vessel" generally referred to "items made of gold and silver, used in the preparation or serving of food and drink, and usually of a size suitable for carrying by hand" (Oxford English Dictionary). It is different from a utensil or an instrument.
